Infant CPR & Safety Class in Berkeley: Gain Essential Knowledge and Hands-On Practice

Infant CPR & Safety Class in Berkeley: Gain Essential Knowledge and Hands-On Practice

Most parents hope they'll never need to use infant CPR or first aid skills. But knowing what to do in those first critical minutes, before help arrives, can make all the difference. Millie's Infant CPR & Safety class is built to give parents and caregivers that knowledge and the confidence to use it.

This is a highly interactive, hands-on class. Rather than just watching a presentation, you'll practice on mannequins so you leave feeling prepared to act quickly and calmly if an emergency happens. Registration includes attendance for two participants, so the birthing person and a partner or another caregiver can attend together.

What the class covers

Infant and child CPR. You'll learn how to perform CPR safely and effectively for babies under one year old as well as older children, with hands-on mannequin practice so the technique actually sticks.

Airway issues and choking response. The class covers how to respond to choking in infants and children, along with related emergencies like reactions to introducing solid foods, allergic reactions, drowning, and seizures.

Trauma and first aid. You'll learn basic first aid for the injuries that come up most often with babies and young kids: cuts, scrapes, falls, burns, and other everyday accidents.

Allergic reactions and poisoning. The class walks through immediate steps to take if your baby or child has an allergic reaction or is exposed to something poisonous, plus how to use resources like Poison Control before a situation becomes an emergency.

Prevention. A meaningful part of the class focuses on preventing accidents before they happen, including crib safety and SIDS risk reduction, safe setups for changing tables, and kitchen safety.

Why hands-on practice matters

Reading about CPR and actually doing it under pressure are two different things. That's why the class centers on practice with mannequins rather than lecture alone. Working through the motions ahead of time, checking for responsiveness, positioning your hands, finding the right rhythm, means you're not trying to learn the technique for the first time in the middle of an emergency.

This is a non-certification class, designed specifically to give parents and caregivers practical, usable knowledge and hands-on experience for handling emergencies with calm and control, not a substitute for a certified CPR course if your work or childcare role requires one.

A few things worth knowing before you're ever in an emergency

Some of what the class covers can also help you prepare in everyday ways, starting well before your baby arrives:

  • Getting to know your pathway to an advice nurse through your insurance or pediatrician's office, so you have a resource for non-emergency questions
  • Understanding your baby's normal baseline, so you can recognize when something has shifted
  • Knowing that direct pressure controls almost all bleeding, and that most head bumps and falls, while scary, aren't usually serious
  • Building a simple infant first aid kit at home with basics like a thermometer, gauze, saline drops, and infant acetaminophen
