Our model

Midwifery-led care backed by
OBs and specialists

Pregnant woman surrounded by options for maternity care providers, including midwives, OB-GYNs, doulas, and specialists.

Certified Nurse Midwives

The primary clinicians for gynecology and maternity at Millie, with OB-GYNs co-managing care when more is needed. Trained and licensed as both registered nurses and midwives. Known for their intimate knowledge of pregnancy and labor and their minimal-intervention approach.

Extensive research shows that CNMs are the ideal care providers for most pregnancies. When midwives are involved in pregnancy care, there are fewer unnecessary medical interventions, higher rates of vaginal births after cesarean section, and higher patient satisfaction.

OB-GYNs

Doctors and surgeons trained to perform cesarean sections, vacuum or forcep deliveries, and other procedures in more complex pregnancies. Some OBs further specialize to become Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists or perinatologists.

At Millie, the UCSF OB-GYNs co-manage care alongside Millie midwives when additional expertise is needed to manage your pregnancy.

Doulas

Professionals trained to provide educational and emotional support throughout the experience of having a baby. Every patient at Millie is paired with a Millie Guide, a practicing doula who meets with you each trimester to go over key topics like creating birth preferences and postpartum planning.

Your Millie Guide is also available to answer questions that come up between visits through the Millie app.

Specialists

An integrated team of lactation consultants, nutritionists, therapists, and other specialists who are available for appointments when needed to help make sure you and your baby are thriving.

"Five stars are too few to describe my incredible journey at Millie! From the pregnancy confirmation appointment to my labor and delivery experience, the Millie team has gone above and beyond to address every question and concern I had, work with me to find personalized treatment options, and deliver the best quality of medical, physical, and emotional care possible."

- Oishika P.

"I decided to use Millie for my annual women's health wellness visit, and it was a great experience! The midwife took the time to listen, talked through options, and advised me on all of the elements of women's health while encouraging me to be an active participant and decision maker in my own health care. The clinic is beautiful, relaxing, and well-appointed."

- Molly L.

“Millie has been fantastic so far. I am 20 weeks along and would highly recommend Millie to other couples looking for alternative care. I really appreciate not having to navigate a cold/uncomfortable hospital system for appointments, and all of the staff and midwives have been great."

- Andrea W.

"After several poor experiences at standard hospitals and clinics, it was a breath of fresh air to find Millie. A friend recommended them to me after I struggled to find a competent queer provider. They were patient and informative and addressed all my concerns with deep compassion. Thank you Millie for redefining what care can feel like."

- Marianne G.

“I only have all of the very best things to say about my experience at Millie. I was with Millie from preconception counseling all the way through the birth of my daughter, and now postpartum and women’s wellness. This was my second child and exactly the care I was looking for. I felt so listened to and supported.”

- Alison M.

"I switched my care from a previous provider to Millie at 20 weeks pregnant, and am so grateful that I did. The entire team that I worked with at Millie, from the front desk to the midwives and doula, made me feel so reassured and looked after throughout my pregnancy and during my birth experience. I truly cannot recommend the Millie Clinic enough."

- Elaine H.

"Millie has been amazing during my first pregnancy. Every time I have questions or concerns the midwives are super attentive and helpful. I would definitely recommend this clinic. Made me feel comfortable and excited for this new chapter in my life. Looking forward to my next upcoming visits."

- Getse J.

FAQs

Need more help?
We’ve got you covered.

What does collaborative OB/midwifery care look like at Millie?

Millie believes everyone needs a midwife, some people need an OB-GYN too, and everyone should have access to both. Patients establish care with a CNM of their choosing, who serves as primary clinician. Higher-risk pregnancies are co-managed with clinic and El Camino Health hospital based OB-GYNs. Some pregnancies may become too high-risk for care at Millie, and in these instances we will work with you to transfer care a more approriate practice of your choosing with a seamless transition of care.

Is my pregnancy a good fit for Millie?

An estimated 80% of pregnancies are low-risk and another 10-15% are moderate-risk; Millie care is designed for this population. Millie does not accept high-risk pregnancies at this time, but we are happy to make a referral. Clinical eligibility details are available for the Palo Alto clinic.

Who will be at my birth and deliver my baby?

Millie midwives and El Camino Health OB-GYNs work together, sharing clinical protocols and a common patient record for a seamless transition from pregnancy to delivery and postpartum care. If a c-section or other intervention is needed, El Camino OB-GYNs perform it in collaboration with the Millie midwives.

Do you take insurance? Which plans?

Millie currently accepts:

  • PPO: Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross of California, Blue Shield of California, Cigna, HealthNet, TRICARE West, UnitedHealthcare
  • HMO: Aetna, Cigna, HealthNet, Valley Health Plan, TRICARE West
  • Medicare accepted

For help confirming coverage or finding in-network options, contact paloaltosupport@millieclinic.com.

What will I pay for my care?

All clinical appointments, lab tests, ultrasounds, and the labor and delivery experience at El Camino Hospital are billed to insurance. In-network lactation services are also offered and accepted by most major insurance plans. There is no extra charge for the Millie app, remote monitoring devices (e.g., blood pressure cuff), or group sessions and messaging with a Millie Guide (a practice-embedded doula). Consultations for supportive care such as educational classes, workshops, postpartum groups, therapy, and nutrition are not currently covered by insurance and are paid out of pocket (may be HSA/FSA eligible).
